The Artist
He is renowed worldwide for his unique creative ability. Onobrakpeya’s focus has been to project an African identity. His career dates back to 1959 when still a student of the Nigerian college of Arts and Science Technology he held his first solo exhibition.
While in Zaria, Onobrakpeya and ten of his colleagues charted a new course for modern Nigerian art by rejecting all forms of European artistic knowledge and opting for a more traditional orientation. They would later be known as the Zaria Rebels
