<span>Ben Osawe</span>

Born 1931 in Benin, Nigeria, Ben Osawe is one of Nigeria’s most prominent post-independence sculptors.

His father was a carver in the court of Oba Iweka II, which gave the young Osawe an early exposure to sculpting. He moved to the UK in 1956 and Studied art at the Camberwell School of Art.

He returned to Nigeria in 1966 and eventually settled in Benin City where he created a long line of evocative bronze and wood sculptures, many based on the themes of elegant African women and noble African ideals.

Osawe died in 2007.
