Elizabeth Ekpetorson, a Nigerian artist who identifies as non-binary was born in 1991.

Ekpetorson earned a Painting degree from the University of Port Harcourt and after an internship at the Universal Studios of Art in Lagos, has embarked on an interesting artistic journey. Ekpetorson’s art explores cubist roots with diverse themes and emotions, characterized by vivid colours, expressive forms, and a dynamic sense of movement, depicting objects from multiple perspectives in an abstract form providing greater context.

Ekpetorson’s art encourages viewers to explore emotions, experiences, and personal interpretations. Ekpetorson explores themes of self-acceptance, driven by spontaneous creative impulses that address human issues. Some artworks reflect the artist’s journey with depression and promote acceptance of everyone’s unique nature and existence. The artist emphasizes that human diversity in thoughts and lifestyle is a blessing that should be embraced.

A key aspect of Ekpetorson’s art has been the interest in human form, expressed through continuous drawings and paintings of friends, fellow artists, and acquaintances.

According to the artist: “My experiences in life inform my artistic practice in the same way the art itself continues to have a tremendous influence over my existence. In rendering my compositions, I employ the human form as a muse, thereby harnessing my feelings, conjuring memories, and putting a stamp on the feeling resident in my work. The motive is to not be boxed up within an identity that does nothing but inhibit artistic possibilities. I am an artist of diverse expressions, with a penchant for nudes and portraits. The drive is to reveal authentic personalities underneath veils, also highlighting the importance of perceiving beyond physical attributes.”

The artist dedicates a significant portion of these artistic expressions to women, aiming to unravel their limitations and empower them through art. These artworks emphasize themes of humanity and freedom, advocating for the release of prejudices based on outward appearances, and delving into the unique characteristics of every entity, whether animate or inanimate.

Ekpetorson currently resides in Lagos.
